A mansion that remembers. A hotel that looks forward. The Generális Borhotel is an 18th-century building reimagined, where the character of the past meets four-star refinement. Behind the historic facade are twenty rooms, warm light, and genuinely personal hospitality.

Step outside and you are on Kossuth tér, in the heart of the world's first closed wine region. Step inside, and Tokaj slows down.

The history of the building

1737 terroir

The official history of the name dates back to 1737, when a royal decree permitted the use of the Tokaj name for wines from a defined wine region.

This established the world's first closed wine region.

1676

A 1676 inventory mentions the Nádasdy House on this part of Tokaj's main square.

1706

Francis II Rákóczi orders the building’s renovation.

after 1715

The Diósgyőr–Tarcal–Tokaj estate becomes the owner.

1733–1798

The Tokaj Imperial Russian Wine Purchasing Commission operates in the building.

1780

Emperor Joseph II stays here and gives a reception in the cross-wing above the inner gate.

1783

The Evangelical Church purchases the property.

1793

The prayer house, later the chapel, is rebuilt through the devoted work of the Tokaj and Tarcal congregations.

1849

Gradual alterations create a chamber cellar, tavern and guesthouse.

1890

A fire destroys Tokaj’s inner town; the Generális house survives.

1919

A fire-service grenade is found on the property.

1924

Restoration work is carried out.

1950

The building is nationalised.

1989

The Evangelical Church regains the building complex.

1993

The property passes into the care of the Municipality of Tokaj and is converted into social rental housing.

2015

Agroforg Kft. purchases the property at auction.

2016

Renovation begins based on the plans of Ferenc Salamin.

2026

The legal successor, Generális Udvarház Kft., realises the vision as the 1737 Terroir restaurant and Generális Borhotel.
