The General Manor House is an 18th century building in a reimagined form, where the character of the past meets four-star sophistication. In the heart of the Tokaj wine region, we have created a space where relaxation goes beyond the ordinary: clean elegance, closeness to nature and tranquility combine to create true relaxation.
For us, gastronomy is not an accessory, but an experience – the offer based on local ingredients and Tokaj wines is a defining part of the stay. The speciality of the General Manor House lies in its family management: this is the approach that makes the time spent here personal, direct and truly attentive. The centuries-old history of Tokaj-Hegyalja comes to life within the walls of the Tokaj General’s Mansion. The 18th-century Baroque monument complex located on Kossuth Square, next to the main square, is named after its former military function. The building served as a military headquarters and officers’ quarters for a long time. With its thick, massive walls and robust, arched porches, it was considered a strategically important, protected point in the city. According to contemporary records and local memory, the “hatted king”, Joseph II, once visited the walls of the building during one of his visits to Tokaj.
After the military era, the fate and atmosphere of the building took a radical turn, and the roar of battle was replaced by sacred silence. The building complex was taken over by the Lutheran Church, and operated as a church and house of prayer for many decades. It became a center of quiet devotion, community life and faith in the heart of the city. Over time and with the decline in the number of local believers, the church finally handed over the building to the city so that the valuable Baroque heritage could find a new, worthy function in tourism.
During the complete interior reconstruction, we paid special attention to preserving the historical Baroque features and the atmosphere of the time. This is how our today’s elegant, 4-star boutique hotel was born from the fusion of the former sacred and historical spaces, as well as our gourmet restaurant “Borkápolna” built on the site of the former prayer space.
